4-H Young Explorers features fun, interactive and educational activities designed to celebrate nature while exploring the beautiful grounds at Klehm Arboretum. Open to all kids ages 9-13, the weekly sessions are led by U of I Extension staff with help from Master Gardener, Master Naturalist and Klehm Arboretum volunteers. Participants do not need to be enrolled in the 4-H program to attend.
Classes will meet on Tuesday mornings in June and July from 9 to 11:30 a.m.at Klehm Arboretum, Clarcor Building, 2715 S. Main St., Rockford. (West side of parking lot)
4-H Young Explorers may sign up for as few or as many sessions as you wish. Each class costs $5 or join all six classes for $25! Entrance into the Arboretum is included. All sessions will include a snack and time for free play.
June 20 – Amazing Science – Scientists are amazing people! Learn how they use the scientific method to discover the wonders of life while trying a few experiments of your own.
June 27 – Wonders of Wetlands – Wetlands are one of Northern Illinois’ most important habitats. Come learn about how wetlands function and some of the creatures that call them home.
July 11 – Feathered & Furry Forest Friends – Our local forests are home to some of our favorite animals, including coyotes and owls. Join us as we learn about common animal adaptations to living within the trees.
July 18 – Pollinators on the Prairie – Prairies are abuzz with life. Come discover why Illinois is called the Prairie State and why pollinators hold the key to our future.
July 25 – Rushing Rivers – Northern Illinois’ 4 beautiful rivers are home to amazing aquatic and land-loving creatures. Come learn what makes our region unique and special.
August 1 – The Amazing Outdoor Adventure – Calling all Young Explorers. Join us on this all-outdoor session which will include games and exploration (weather permitting).
